This year, in association with the Festival, The Alliance is proud to present Oliver Schmitz’s insightful drama Life, Above All.
Reinventing the coming-of-age story, Life, Above All centres on Chanda, a young girl who must maintain the facade of a normal life amidst utter instability. The spread of HIV/AIDS appears to be ravaging Chanda’s South African township even though no one will speak the actual words. A moving examination of a poorly understood and much-feared disease, Life, Above All explores cultural taboos, adolescence, and religion through Chanda’s experience of her mother being diagnosed with HIV and the subsequent rejection by their community.
