Oliver Schmitz’s insightful drama Life, Above All

The Human Rights Watch Film Festival returns to London from 24 March - 1 April with a programme packed full of documentaries and dramas set to inspire, inform and trigger debate.

This year, in association with the Festival, The Alliance is proud to present Oliver Schmitz’s insightful drama Life, Above All.

Reinventing the coming-of-age story, Life, Above All centres on Chanda, a young girl who must maintain the facade of a normal life amidst utter instability. The spread of HIV/AIDS appears to be ravaging Chanda’s South African township even though no one will speak the actual words. A moving examination of a poorly understood and much-feared disease, Life, Above All explores cultural taboos, adolescence, and religion through Chanda’s experience of her mother being diagnosed with HIV and the subsequent rejection by their community.
