The region has the second highest rate of teenage pregnancies in the Philippines.
The Eastern Visayas Area Cooperation for Health, or EVAcoh project aims to engage the population through existing community cooperatives and provide maternal and family health care products and services, along with HIV prevention services, to underserved members of the population.
The project will have a particular focus on HIV prevention in Cebu City where health authorities have recently confirmed an HIV outbreak among people who inject drugs.
Supported by the European Commission and the International HIV/AIDS Alliance, the EVAcoh Project will be jointly managed and implemented by PHANSuP and VICTO National Cooperative Federation and Development Center, one of the biggest and oldest cooperative networks in the country.
Launch event
The launch was marked by an event led by Dr.
Carlos Calica, Chair of PHANSuP Board of Trustees, Roberto Nebrida,
PHANSuP Executive Director, Mercedes Castillo, Chief Executive Officer
of VICTO.
The event was attended by officials of the target partner cooperatives as well as key government stakeholders. They included a member of the Philippine Congress and the regional directors of national government agencies, among others.
This included Atty. Isidro Lico, Ating Koop Party-list Representative, Dr. Edgardo Gonzaga of the Department of Health, and Armon Paa of the Cooperative Development Authority. All the attendees gave speeches pledging support to the project.
