Women and girls make up over half* of the people reached through Alliance community-based services that are tackling HIV and other health related issues.
HIV and women
Globally 52% of all people living with HIV in low and middle-income countries are women. And in sub-Saharan Africa, the centre of the global epidemic, women still account for approximately 57% of all people living with HIV.
HIV continues to be driven by gender inequalities and harmful gender norms that promote unsafe sex and reduce access to HIV and sexual and reproductive health services for men, women and transgender people.
We’ve put together this photo gallery which features some of the amazing women who lead Alliance Linking Organisations, along with some of the women that they support.
Inspiring Change is the theme of International Women’s Day in 2014. Each year International Women's Day is celebrated on March 8. The first International Women's Day was held in 1911.
