Alliance Linking Organisations and partners from Latin America and the Caribbean gathered in the UK on 26-30 July to discuss critical issues for the region’s response to HIV.
Alliance linking organisations from the Caribbean, Mexico, Peru and Bolivia, as well as as partners in El Salvador and Haiti, attended the annual “Blue Sky Week” joining key regional partners REDTRASEX (the LAC sex workers network) and REDLACTRANS (the LAC transgender network).
Attendees discussed the new Alliance strategic framework, HIV and Healthy Communities, the new Alliance prevention campaign, and developed a shared advocacy agenda for the coming year focused on human rights, harmonisation of HIV efforts, access to funding by key populations and prevention.
On Thursday, the group travelled to London to participate in an external seminar on the theme Building inclusive communities: sexuality, rights and progress towards MDG6 in Latin America and the Caribbean. The event, chaired by Baroness Anne Gibson of Market Rasen, Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group of Latin America and the Caribbean, and was attended by representatives from the Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB and Malaria Secretariat and the UK’s Department for International Development.
Anamaria Bejar, Head of the Latin America and Caribbean region at the Alliance secretariat said: ‘The annual Blue Sky Week enables us to work together strategically on improving the quality of technical programming and preparing joint advocacy strategies. Being part of an international platform can increase the potential of what Alliance members in the Latin America and Caribbean region can do in every sense.’
