MDG summit and statement on international assistance as a human rights obligation

The UNAIDS Reference Group on HIV and Human Rights has issued a "Statement on mutual responsibility for universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support in the context of the Summit on the Millennium Development Goals.

The statement emphasises that recent progress towards universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support, has been a matter of making states live up to their national and international human rights responsibilities.

Christine Stegling, Associate Director of the Best Practice Unit and Senior Adviser on Human Rights at the Alliance is a member of the UNAIDS Reference Group.

This approach could be used as a model for the realization of all elements of the human right to health, as well as other human rights.
