Via Libre influences national TB/HIV plan in Peru

Via Libre's logo

Recommendations from Via Libre’s successful integrated TB/HIV pilot project will be adopted at national level in Peru.

Via Libre brought TB and HIV national programme coordinators together through a public forum in January 2011, where it was agreed that a new national plan to tackle TB/HIV 2012-16 would incorporate the project’s recommendations.

This includes recognising the key role of communities, and guaranteeing the involvement of marginalised populations, such as sex workers, transgender people, and men who have sex with men.

The plan will be coordinated nationally, supporting implementation at local level, to build on the success of Via Libre’s project which was effective at:

  • raising awareness of TB/HIV co-infection
  • reducing spread of infection in hospitals
  • securing integrated support for patients, including information, advice, treatment and psycho-emotional support
  • reducing TB related stigma
  • and, as this latest success demonstrates - providing advocacy training community leaders to get TB and HIV on technical and political agendas, at national level.
