ABS is a national network of over 400 organisations who respond to HIV and AIDS in Burundi. ABS works to support its members to engage effectively with communities. This encompasses capacity building support, grants to members and technical support/training.
In addition, ABS works at the national level to advocate for increased support to civil society efforts for HIV/AIDS as well as promoting the engagement of civil in national health policy making.
In 2011 ABS will be focusing on expanding its regional presence and support to provincial level. Linked to this ABS will continue to work to support and build the capacity of its member organisations across Burundi.
In addition, ABS will expand work advocating for people living with HIV/AIDS in Burundi by continuing to work with the relevant national HIV/AIDS bodies, such as the UNAIDS technical working group and the National AIDS Council.
Burundi has recently emerged from a prolonged civil war that devastated much of its economy, infrastructures and social services. The 1993–2005 conflict had a profound impact on the living conditions of the population, significantly increasing vulnerability to HIV/AIDS.
Burundi has a population of 8.5 million. The HIV epidemic in Burundi is classed at ‘generalised’ with a prevalence of 3.6%.
