From San Salvador to Abidjan: The Alliance marks World AIDS Day
26 November 2013
World AIDS Day is held on 1 December each year and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died.
Read on for information about how four of our Linking Organisations and the international secretariat will be marking the day.
Our Linking Organisation, Asociación Atlacatl Vivo Positivo, will distribute 25,000 red ribbons to staff in a variety of state and private organisations in the municipalities of San Salvador and Santa Tecla and of Antiguo Cuzcatlan. The social security office has also provided The Red Ribbon Campaign with large banners which appear on advertising boards along the main highways in El Salvador. On 29 November a large red ribbon will be placed on El Salvador’s most notable national monument (the monument of Salvador del Mundo), and between 1,000 to 1,500 people will walk from Parque Cuzcatlan to the monument of Salvador del Mundo in a march of solidarity.
For World AIDS Day 2013, Côte d'Ivoire has chosen to focus on raising awareness of the UNAIDS campaign ‘Zero new HIV infections, Zero discrimination, Zero AIDS-related deaths’. Our Linking Organisation, Alliance Nationale contre le SIDA en Côte d’Ivoire, will establish a community village in the centre of Abidjan, as a focus for events marking the Day in the city. Implementing partners will run stalls to raise awareness of the stigma and discrimination faced by people living with HIV, and provide free access to voluntary HIV counselling and testing.
Alliance Ukraine will host a high-profile charitable dinner and auction on Saturday 30 November. The goal is to raise awareness of HIV and raise funds for their work to support key populations who are at higher risk of HIV. Among the guests will be Lord Norman Fowler, Chair of the House of Lords’ Select Committee on HIV and Vice Chair of the UK All Party Parliamentary Group on HIV & AIDS (APPG). He conducted a field visit to Ukraine in 2012, and has offered up a prize for the auction which is a hosted lunch with him in the UK House of Lords.
Alliance Burundaise Contre le Sida will help coordinate a TV panel debate on the sexual health needs of young people - in relation to their work on the Link Up project which aims to advance the sexual and reproductive health and rights of young people in five countries. They are organising the show, to air on Friday 29 November, with the Ministry of Health and the media.
The international secretariat of the Alliance is collaborating with other Sussex based AIDS charities to unveil the world’s largest red ribbon on Sunday 1 December. Local MP, Caroline Lucas will be in attendance. We will also participate in the Brighton AIDS Memorial which is being organised by the Brighton and Hove World AIDS Day Community Partnership. Secretariat staff will also attend a World AIDS Day lunch on Wednesday 4 December.
