National coverage

Alliance Nationale contre le SIDA (ANS-CI) is a non-governmental organisation supporting groups responding to HIV at the community level in Côte d'Ivoire. It was established in 2005, with funding from USAID and CDC/PEPFAR.

Côte d'Ivoire has a generalised HIV epidemic with an estimated prevalence of 3.4% and as many as 440,000 of the nation’s children are orphans due to AIDS. There is also an extremely high prevalence among vulnerable groups such as sex workers (44%) and men who have sex with men (43%).

The country’s political instability has greatly hampered the response to HIV, and has resulted in limited access to health care and medication.

In order to improve the HIV response in the country ANS-CI works to build the capacity of national NGOs and CBOs. It manages sub-grants and provides financial and technical support to community based and civil society organisations.

Strengthening the national response

ANS-CI is one the Principal Recipients for Global Fund Round 9 (GFR9) in Côte d’Ivoire, for a project called ‘Strengthening the national response to HIV to scale up prevention and comprehensive care, factoring in gender and key populations’. Work focuses on:

• Improving access to prevention services
• Reducing AIDS-related deaths by providing access to care, improving services and ensuring continuity in care and treatment.
• Strengthening the capacity of national entities in the areas of: leadership, coordination and monitoring and evaluation.

Through six Sub-Recipients (two with national coverage and four with regional coverage) ANS-CI expects to reach:

• 287,668 youths with prevention messages from peer educators
• 16,200 sex workers and 2,628 men who have sex with men with HIV prevention programmes.
• 17,000 pregnant women with prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT) services
• 15,783 people living with HIV and 13,000 orphans and vulnerable children with care and support.

ANS-CI also:

• Works to strengthen the capacity of NGOs and CBOs to implement prevention activities which are not just abstinence based and increase the level of voluntary testing in the country.
• Works to improve the national monitoring and evaluation (M&E) system and build the M&E capacity of civil society organisations.
• ANS-CI is one of four Alliance Linking Organisations working to increase access to and uptake of prevention of parent to child transmission as part of the Alliance’s Africa Regional Programme, read more here.
  

Key achievements

In 2011 ANS-CI:

• Supported 45 organisations financially
• Reached 79,532 people directly through services (excluding information, education and communication materials and/or activities and referrals)
• Distributed 61,877 condoms
• Provided 28 technical support activities
