Our Linking Organisation PHANSuP (Philippines NGO Support Program) has a 20 year history of supporting community based responses to HIV and AIDS.

Although the Philippines has a low HIV prevalence rate (0.04%) the rate is continuing to rise, particularly among high-risk groups like men who have sex with men (MSM) and people who use drugs. The rate of new infections continues to grow and in 2010 the Global Fund reported that the country is one of only seven in the world to have seen a 25% increase in HIV incidence.

PHANSuP supports communities to effectively respond to health and development concerns through:

Grant and project management

Technical support provision and management

Conducting research, training, conferences and learning events

It champions the integration of sexual reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in HIV programming through EC funding and has adopted a holistic approach to health promotion by broadening its scope to address wider health and development issues, including TB-HIV co-infection. For example HIV and TB testing, treatment and prevention services have been the main focus of the WHO funded ‘Reaching the Urban Poor’ project in Malabon City.

PHANSuP also:

Keeps mothers healthy by providing maternal and family health care products and services, along with HIV prevention services to the urban poor in the Eastern Visayas region. You can reach more about this project here.

Works with people who are most vulnerable to HIV by supporting peer outreach and providing referral services to people who use drugs and MSM for testing, counselling and treatment. PHANSuP is currently piloting a new prevention project called TXT DUDE which encourages people at higher risk of HIV to access information on HIV testing and treatment services via SMS.

Advocates for the rights of people at higher risk of HIV and has hosted a forum where drug users can speak out about the issues which affect them, read more here.

Runs ‘Reproductive Health Youth Bases’. Described as a ‘laboratory for youth leadership’, the bases provide youth-driven and youth-friendly services, and encourage community outreach and volunteering. There are now fourteen of these operating across the Philippines.

Created the Asia Pacific Reprohealth and Development Centre to accelerate community development in the region and provide a platform for knowledge and skills sharing.

Key achievements
