In Senegal our Linking Organisation, ANCS, provides technical, programmatic and institutional backing to around 500 NGOs and CBOs across the country.

Senegal has a concentrated epidemic with a very high HIV prevalence among key populations such as men who have sex with men (21.8%), and sex workers (18.5%). The country has also witnessed an increased feminisation of the HIV epidemic, with 0.8% of women infected, compared to 0.5% of men.

Consequently much of ANCS’ work focuses on preventing HIV among key populations and women.

With the support of the Global Fund, ANCS is working to accelerate universal access to prevention, care, treatment and support services. ANCS is one the Principal Recipients for Global Fund Round 9 (GFR9) in Senegal, together with the Ministry of Health and the National AIDS Council. The GFR9 focuses on:

• Reducing new HIV infections
• Improving the quality of life of people infected and affected by HIV
• Promoting a conducive environment
• Improving management and coordination and strategic information
• Strengthening health and community systems

By 2015 the project expects:

• To reach 12,915 sex workers, 2,650 MSM, 636,264 youths and 272,684 women
• 688,342 people will have been tested for HIV, and 603,655 pregnant women will have been given a comprehensive package of prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT) services
• 8,937 people living with HIV will be supported with antiretroviral therapy
• To strengthen Senegal’s health system, 234 health structures will be rehabilitated, and 100 nurses and midwives will be recruited

ANCS also:

• Helps fight HIV/TB in high prevalence and remote areas: through FHI/USAID funding ANCS is helping to build the capacity of CBOs in border and tourist areas to undertake HIV/TB prevention, care and support services, in locations where isolated and itinerant populations are at very high risk of HIV. • Works to prevent HIV amongst sex workers and men who have sex with men, and improve their access to sexual and reproductive health services. This work is part of the Alliance’s Africa Regional Programme.

Key Achievements

• Since 2010 ANCS’ coverage has increased dramatically, with the number of NGOs and CBOs it works with growing from 350 to over 500 today.
• A collaborative partnership with the parliamentarians has been developed through a previous UNIFEM project for political and economic empowerment of women living with HIV.
