Focus on women, children and youth
VMM implements HIV-related programmes in all 23 districts of Andhra Pradesh with 32 NGOs.
VMM works on HIV and AIDS, sexually transmitted infections (STI), Tuberculosis (TB), sexual reproductive health rights (SRHR). It focuses on the needs of women living with HIV, young people, maternal and child health, safe motherhood, integration of HIV services into the wider sexual and reproductive health field, trafficking, domestic violence and harassment.
It supports a network of non-governmental organisations, community-based groups, associations of people living with HIV and public health sector staff to provide comprehensive HIV-related services.
A community-based approach
Having piloted home and community-based care and support in Andhra Pradesh, VMM has since seen its approach replicated by other agencies, including the State AIDS Control Society. The organisation actively involves affected communities in running its programmes. This includes having children take part in planning and reviewing child-focused activities, such as expanding community foster care for AIDS orphans.
This can be seen in VMM’s formation of a community based organisation for orphans and vulnerable children, the Children Leadership Development Association. It supports programmes with a child centric approach with capacity building, advocacy and project implementation.
VMM also provides technical support for facilitating workshops, exposure visits and developing training modules for NGOs on home based care and support. It developed a paediatric counselling module for the National AIDS Control Organisation with the support of WHO’s India country office.
