Nigeria

NELAH, our Linking Organisation in Nigeria, aims to reduce the burden of health care for individuals and build the capacity of CBOs to do the same.

Nigeria has a generalised HIV epidemic, with an adult HIV prevalence of 3.6%. 58% of people living with HIV are women and the country has 2.5 million orphans and vulnerable children due to HIV and AIDS. Consequently women, youths and children are the focus of much of NELAH’s work.

NELAH provides technical and financial support, training and mentoring to non-governmental and faith-based organisations to help them develop and deliver quality HIV and AIDS prevention, care and support services. It also works to ensure that health care services are sustainable and accessible to all.

NELAH is one of four Alliance Linking Organisations working to increase access to and uptake of prevention of parent to child transmission (PPTCT) as part of the Africa Regional Programme, read more here.

NELAH also:

  • Provides care and support and prevention services for people living with HIV, orphans and vulnerable children, and affected families. NELAH has particularly strong experience in home and community based care and support, which it uses as an entry point for a range of other support. As part of this work it runs a short-stay centre in Oyo State for people living with HIV and their families, which provides basic health care and comprehensive HIV care and support services. For World AIDS Day 2012 the centre was part of a community campaign on prevention of parent to child transmission, read more in this blog.
  • Runs a resource centre for young people with a library and internet access. The centre runs information sessions on HIV/sexual and reproductive health twice a month for people using the centre.
  • Works to improve collaboration between local, regional and international organisations working on HIV and AIDS, human rights and related health issues.

Key achievements

  • In 2011 NELAH supported 25 organisations financially and reached over 6,000 people directly through services.
