WHAT WE DO
Our approach
Since 1977, PWDS has been providing integrated services in the areas of health, income generation, women’s issues, rural development, education and habitat. PWDS views HIV not only as a health issue, but as a development issue that should be addressed with a development agenda. PWDS works for the socio-economic development of marginalised communities, building people’s organisations and working with over 50 NGOs across Tamil Nadu.
Care and support
PWDS home and community-based care and support project – the first of its kind in Tamil Nadu – is implemented by eighteen partner organisations in ten districts, with funding from Abbott Laboratories. The project works on: prevention of mother to child transmission; identifying and enrolling children living with HIV in care and support services; and in expanding access to treatment and care for children living with HIV. In 2010 - 2011, the project reached more than 30,000 people living with HIV, affected children and their families.
CHAHA
PWDS implemented the CHAHA programme in eleven districts of Tamil Nadu to reduce the impact of HIV on children and families. In 2010 – 2011, the project has reached more than 13,000 affected children and their families.
Sexual and reproductive health and rights
PWDS implements a sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) project in five districts of Tamil Nadu. The project works to strengthen civil society organisations and networks, specifically those representing and working with people living with HIV and other key populations (men who have sex with men, sex workers, transgender people and people who use drugs), to effectively advocate for the development and implementation of SRHR policies and programmes for people living with HIV.
