Alvaro Bermejo to step down as Executive Director
01 July 2015
After nearly 12 years, Dr Alvaro Bermejo has announced that he is to step down as Executive Director of the International HIV/AIDS Alliance. He will continue to serve and lead the Alliance until November, while his successor is being identified.
In making his announcement, Dr Bermejo said: “I was privileged, when I started in January 2004 to find an organisation of pioneers, with a big reputation and a vision with huge potential to go further."
“It is not the time now to try and describe the development and transformation the Alliance has contributed to in these last 12 years. Only to remember the many more people and communities reached, and the tides of new HIV infection, AIDS deaths and fear and prejudice beginning to turn through our work. This is what makes me so proud.”
Referring to the Linking Organisations which form the heart of the Alliance, he said:
“I am convinced the spirit of solidarity and collaboration that has guided this Alliance will continue to guide it to further achievements until we do, finally, see the end of AIDS and a fairer, more inclusive world emerging in its wake. There is still so much to do.”
Dr Bermejo will remain in post until the next Board meeting in November 2015. Chair of Trustees, Martin Dinham, expressed huge gratitude to Dr Bermejo for his leadership of the Alliance over the last 12 years. He said that a small group of trustees would launch an extensive search process to find a new Executive Director for the Alliance who will build on its significant successes to date, and unite the Alliance’s ongoing efforts to bring about a world without AIDS.
Dr Alvaro Bermejo joined the Alliance in January 2004. From 2011 to 2013 he served as Board member for the Developed Country NGO delegation to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Prior to this he was Director of the Health and Care Department of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
Dr Bermejo will take up a new post at the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) as their Executive Director Health when he leaves the Alliance in November. Read their announcement of his appointment.
