Remembering Joel Nana
16 October 2015
The Alliance expresses its sadness at the passing of Joel Nana Gustavo, the founding Executive Director of African Men for Sexual Health and Rights (AMSHeR).
Joel was a human rights and public health champion who invested time and energy in addressing the struggles of gay men and other men who have sex with men (MSM) on the African continent.
“Joel had a larger than life presence and was a powerful advocate for African leadership and voice in the HIV response” said Gavin Reid, Regional Advisor on the Men’s Sexual Health and Rights Programme (SHARP).
Joel started his career in his country of birth, Cameroon where he worked for the Cameroonian gay association (AGALES) and he then went on to co-found Alternatives Cameroun, which was a human rights organisation working to address homophobia and end discrimination against the LGBT community. Before founding AMSHER Joel worked for the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC) as a research and policy associate.
The impact of his activism will be felt throughout the Africa continent and it has informed and shaped much of the current dialogue around the issue of homosexuality in Africa.
