New trustees joining the Alliance
14 July 2016
The Secretariat of the International HIV/AIDS Alliance is delighted to announce the appointment of new members to fill vacancies on its Board of Trustees. Three will join the Board in November 2016 with further appointments planned for May 2017.
Thoko Moyo, Director, Global Strategic Communications, The Ford Foundation
Thoko is a strategic communications professional with a background in international and regional journalism (BBC, SABC Africa) and over 15 years of experience leading strategic communications and media functions of international development institutions and Fortune 500 companies. A South African national, she was most recently the Communications Head for the Jobs Group of the World Bank based in Washington DC.
“I am from a region of the world that is the epicentre of HIV pandemic and so supporting efforts to find a cure and ensuring the rights of people affected by HIV is a personal quest and passion”, said Thoko. On her role as trustee, she said “I will focus my contributions on how to lift up and communicate our investments and impact in ways that strengthen advocacy efforts.”
Warren (Buck) Buckingham III
Buck founded buckingham global health LLC in 2012 after concluding a 21-year US Federal career as Director of the Office of Global Health and HIV for the U.S. Peace Corps. While at Peace Corps, Buck served as a Deputy Principal contributing global policy and programmatic direction for the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Buck received the Meritorious Honor Award for service as PEPFAR coordinator in Kenya from 2002 – 2009, and the first PEPFAR Life Achievement Award in 2007.
Living with HIV since 1988, Buck is a public champion of the importance of people living with HIV contributing to solutions to the pandemic at every level.
He said “It will be my privilege to bring my accumulated work experience and my impassioned commitment to the effective involvement of people living with HIV to the Alliance’s call to working together to end AIDS.”
Kieran Daly, Deputy Director, Program Advocacy and Communications, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
Kieran has an academic background in development economics. He served as the Chief Executive Officer of the International Council of AIDS Service Organizations (ICASO), and has also worked previously for the International HIV/AIDS Alliance as Senior Policy Advisor.
Speaking about his appointment, Kieran said “I have long been an admirer of the quality and impact of the work of the Alliance, as a former employee, partner and now as a donor. There are very few organisations like the Alliance that serve to build the capacity of national organisations to support communities as a raison-d’etre rather than just a side-effect.”
Our Board of Trustees
The role of the Alliance Board of Trustees includes approving the Alliance’s global strategy, ensuring that the organisation’s broad policies and strategies are in keeping with its mission and providing oversight to the Alliance’s International Secretariat.
The new members join a long and illustrious list of past and present trustees.
