Alliance selected by Elton John Foundation for innovative LGBT fund

The Alliance has been selected by the Elton John AIDS Foundation, PEPFAR and the office of the Global AIDS Co-ordinator (OGAC) to deliver an innovative $4 million fund aimed at protecting LGBT communities in hostile environments.

The Alliance works with a network of 800 LGBT community groups across 25 countries and last year reached 700,000 LGBT people, many of them criminalised.

This investment will be used to provide rapid response and emergency support grants on the ground for LGBT communities in countries where they are threatened. A separate fund will be available providing longer-term solutions to hostile legal, political or policy developments deemed threatening to the LGBT community.

Speaking at the International AIDS Conference in Durban, Sir Elton John said: "I'm delighted to present the International HIV/AIDS Alliance and the Global Forum on MSM and HIV as inaugural recipients of the  LGBT fund. This is something we have worked towards for a long time in our attempts to make a real and lasting difference in HIV awareness, education and prevention."

Shaun Mellors, the Alliance’s Associate Director for Africa, said: “This is very welcome news. LGBT communities are under threat in many countries around the world. Often they cannot rely on the police, or the legal or political system to support and protect their basic human rights.

“When local LGBT communities come under threat it is often the local, community-based networks that fill the gap, providing legal, economic and sometimes physical protection from a hostile outside world.

When local LGBT communities come under threat it is often the local, community-based networks that fill the gap...The importance of Sir Elton John’s involvement in this initiative also cannot be overstated.

“The importance of Sir Elton John’s involvement in this initiative also cannot be overstated. In working with PEPFAR on this initiative he brings a welcome high profile to an issue that widely affects LGBT communities.”
