Young people account for 40% of all new HIV infections. Each day, more than 2,400 young people become infected with HIV - and some five million young people aged 15-24 are living with HIV.

Link Up is an ambitious project which is improving the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of more than one million young people in Bangladesh, Burundi, EthiopiaMyanmar and Uganda.

Young people are often underserved by HIV programmes, or not served at all. Link Up aims to change this.

Young people have the power, through their leadership, to help bring an end to AIDS. Watch Strictly Beza below, as an example of the inspiring work being carried out young people in Ethiopia.

How do you get safe sex messages to young people in Ethiopia, where cultural attitudes make discussing sex taboo? Form a fierce dance troupe, gather a crowd, and then share information on HIV prevention.

The BEZA Anti-AIDS youth group is one of the 100s of youth groups supported by the Organization of Social Services for AIDS (OSSA) , the Alliance Linking Organisation in Ethiopia.

Link Up reaches young women and men living with and affected by HIV aged 24 years and under, with a particular focus on young people living with HIV, sex workers and children who are exploited for sex†, and LGBT people, all of whom experience extreme difficulties accessing services due to the high levels of stigma, discrimination, and in some cases, the fear of arrest.

†We refer to sex workers (aged 18-24) where relevant and ‘children exploited for sex’ for under 18s.

Download the project overview for more information and our policy briefing which summarises our recommendations for governments, ministries of health, donors, global policymakers and civil society groups.

Link Up runs from January 2013 to January 2016. It is funded by the Government of the Netherlands’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs (BUZA) through its Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) Fund.

The project draws on the experiences and strengths of a consortium of organisations.
