Stop the persecution in paradise - update
A huge thank you to all who supported the campaign!
Of the 75+ countries that criminalise LGBT people, 40 of these are in the Commonwealth.
Not only is it an appalling abuse of human rights to criminalise people on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity, but as a result of criminalisation, and alongside wider stigma and discrimination, LGBT people face crisis levels of HIV infection.
That’s why we will shortly be handing the petition with your signature to Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma asking for his continued leadership on promoting the rights of LGBT people. We will also send a copy to the incoming Secretary-General Baroness Patricia Scotland with a request that she continues this work when she takes office in 2016.
Your voice along with the voices of people from 60 countries around the world will help to keep the pressure on governments to stop the persecution of LGBT people.
We will continue working to call for the decriminalisation of people around the world on the basis of their sexual orientation and gender identity. Sign up to our email list to keep updated on our progress.
