Building a strategic partnership with the UK government
News from the International HIV/AIDS Alliance
21 February 2005: for immediate release
THE INTERNATIONAL HIV/AIDS ALLIANCE (the Alliance) has renewed and strengthened its partnership with the British government, with the official announcement on Tuesday 22 February of increased support under a Partnership Programme Agreement (PPA) with the Department for International Development to respond to the global HIV/AIDS epidemic. The new agreement will provide £2.75 million of strategic funding to the Alliance in 2005/6.
Alvaro Bermejo, Executive Director of the Alliance, said:
“Our partnership with the Department for International Development (DFID) will significantly contribute to reducing the spread of HIV and mitigating the impact of AIDS in developing countries. Through this work we will also directly support DFID’s commitment to the Millennium Development Goals and the United Nations’ UNGASS declaration of commitment on HIV/AIDS.
“We have had an ongoing relationship with DFID since the Alliance’s inception in 1993, when the Overseas Development Agency was part of the consortium which provided the impetus to set up the Alliance. More recently we were involved in consultations about the UK government’s new strategy for tackling HIV and AIDS in the developing world, and DFID was involved in the development of our own strategic framework for 2005 -2007.
“The Alliance has a unique focus on community action on HIV/AIDS, and we look forward to developing our constructive partnership with DFID further in the future for the benefit of communities facing the HIV epidemic worldwide.”
