Linking learning and action: the importance of research
The Institute of Development Studies and the International HIV/AIDS Alliance have announced a new ongoing research partnership that will explore topics such as access to treatment care, health systems and effective influencing strategies. The collaboration is underpinned by the belief that there is a need to strengthen the links between evidence, and policy and practice.

Cambodia law threatens effectiveness of HIV prevention work with sex workers
Sex workers, entertainment workers and AIDS activists in Cambodia have expressed concern a new law introduced in February on human trafficking and sexual exploitation could drive sex workers underground and undermine HIV prevention efforts in the country.

Surviving the earthquake
On 12 May 2008, staff at the Alliance’s partner, Chengdu Gay Care Organisation in south-west China, were going about their daily routines when they were hit by the impact of the worst earthquake to strike China in ten years. Senegal meeting allows civil society organisations to share their experiences
Civil society organisations have contributed significantly to Senegal’s HIV response. This was the message from the executive secretary of Senegal’s national AIDS council at a two-day meeting organised by Alliance linking organisation ANCS in Senegal. The meeting allowed civil society organisations implementing the Global Fund programme in the country to share their experiences and learn from each other.

Madagascar meeting prompts decision-makers to act against discrimination
A meeting organised by Alliance Madagascar, in which men who have sex with men spoke about the discrimination that they face, prompted key local decision makers, including journalists and local authority representatives, to take action.

Kenya: adapting to a changing epidemic
Alliance implementing partner Women Fighting AIDS in Kenya is adapting its services in line with the country’s changing HIV response. As more people are able to access HIV treatment through the public health care system, WOFAK will focus on supporting more people to access and adhere to treatment.

Act now for health
Act now for health, a joint campaign by Action for Global Health, the Global Movement for Children, Oxfam International, Save the Children UK and WorldVision International, is calling for world governments to ensure that health is a priority in 2008.
2008 is the mid-way point to achieving the Millennium Development Goals by 2015, and also marks the 30-year anniversary of the Declaration of Alma Ata – a declaration upholding the right to health and calling on the international community to make healthcare for all a reality by the year 2000.
