There are many different models of NGO support programmes, often with very different origins. Some are donor-initiated programmes, while some are self-initiated groups. Many programmes focus solely on providing support to NGOs and CBOs, while others are implementing organisations that have developed support functions.
Although the majority of NGO support programmes tend to be based within an NGO, there are an increasing number which are operated by government bodies, donors, para-statals or co-ordinating bodies (such as National and Provincial AIDS Commisions).
