ANCS, the Alliance's linking organisation in Senegal, celebrates its tenth birthday

16 April 2005

On 6 October 2005, L’Alliance Nationale Contre le SIDA (ANCS), the Alliance’s linking organisation in Senegal marked its ten-year anniversary, celebrating their support for more than 1,000 non-governmental and community-based organisations in that time.

More than 300 representatives from partner organisations joined ANCS in celebrating “Ten years of community mobilisation against sexually transmitted infections/ HIV/AIDS”. Many of those responsible for ANCS’s success were present, from founding members of ANCS, ANCS’s first partners, past and current members of the board of directors and national and international press. It was an opportunity, not just to celebrate, but also to reflect on the achievements of successful ANCS partnerships, including Senegal's prevalence rate in the general population continuing to be less than 2%.

A photo exhibition allowed participants to appreciate the range of ANCS’s programmatic work, from its participatory approach to prevention, to its recent initiative ‘Association Leaders’ which strengthens and supports larger, established non-governmental and community-based organisations to mobilise and support local community groups in their response to HIV/AIDS.

Jerker Edstrom, director of field programmes at the Alliance secretariat complemented ANCS’s role in South-to-South technical support and their contribution in sharing experience both regionally and internationally.
