New Alliance programme to work across national borders in sub-Saharan Africa
28 April 2005
The Alliance is implementing a three-year (2005-2007) Africa Regional HIV/AIDS Programme co-funded by Sida (the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency), Buza (the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs) and DANIDA (the Danish International Development Agency). The programme will cover West, East and Southern Africa including countries where the Alliance already has programmes and partners, as well as areas where it doesn’t yet have a presence.
The programme aims to enhance the quality and scale of HIV prevention, care and impact mitigation across national borders in sub-Saharan Africa.
In broad terms, the programme’s objectives are to improved coverage of effective community-focused AIDS efforts in Africa; strengthen leadership and capacity of African civil society to respond to AIDS; and improve the institutional, organisational and policy environment for community AIDS responses in Africa.
The Africa Regional HIV/AIDS Programme intends to achieve these objectives through a combination of regional level strategies and intensive national/state level programme strategies. Activities will focus on developing and supporting innovative pilot programmes in the region, and developing and replicating successful community models. In addition, regional capacity will be strengthened on thematic areas, lessons will be shared, and learning from others encouraged. Thematic areas will include capacity building for networks of people living with HIV/AIDS in the region, skills building in positive prevention, anti-stigma work and HIV prevention with youth. The programme will also be engaged in key HIV/AIDS policy and advocacy issues and improving networking in the region.
