New Alliance stigma reduction programme for Mexico

27 May 2005

Alliance linking organisation Colectivo Sol has successfully launched a three-year HIV/AIDS stigma-reduction programme in key states of Mexico.

Funded by GlaxoSmithKline Positive Action, the new programme aims to build capacity among non-governmental and community-based organisations to address HIV/AIDS-related stigma and discrimination. It will provide grants to support programmes which work with key populations such as people living with HIV/AIDS, sex workers and men who have sex with men. It also aims to influence national and local HIV/AIDS policy and programming related to stigma and discrimination against these key populations.

Colectivo Sol proved themselves a key player in the response to AIDS in Mexico by bringing together more than 50 of the country’s key stakeholders, all pledging support for the programme. Colectivo Sol and the Alliance were particularly commended for creating an advisory board that will feed back on the quality of the project’s interventions, as well as having a committee to select the projects to be funded.

Alianza Mexico – a new network of non-governmental organisation experts in technical support on HIV/AIDS issues – was launched alongside the stigma reduction programme. Alianza Mexico – of which Colective Sol is a member – will be the key technical assistance providers for the programme, and will be actively fundraising to provide regional and national technical support.
