Alliance workshop helps religious leaders in Madagascar respond more comprehensively to HIV/AIDS

27 May 2005

Following a request from the US ambassador, USAID asked the Alliance to facilitate a short workshop with a group of religious leaders to discuss their role in the response to HIV/AIDS in Madagascar. So far, religious organisations in Madagascar have focused primarily on communicating prevention messages.

The workshop focused on helping participants to understand all the components of a comprehensive response to HIV/AIDS. The Alliance will hold a follow-up workshop to allow participants to share their experiences to date in responding to HIV/AIDS. USAID has also asked the Alliance to develop a programme of technical support to build the religious leaders’ platform.

In a parallel initiative, the World Council of Churches organised a workshop to build the skills of religious leaders to respond to HIV/AIDS. The Alliance was asked to facilitate a half-day session based on its participatory prevention guide. Fifty-five leaders participated in this session.
