Alliance to showcase Frontiers Prevention Project at Asia Pacific AIDS conference

27 May 2005

The 7th International Conference on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP) in Kobe, Japan from 1-5 July provides an important opportunity to highlight the continued growth of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Asia and the Pacific and to increase political will and community interest in tackling AIDS across the region. The Alliance will be using the conference to profile its work, influence policy, and to forge better links among Alliance partners in Asia and the Pacific.

A series of activities and events are planned including poster, oral and skills building sessions, and distribution of Alliance publications and resources at an exhibition booth. Alliance staff, partners and representatives of the communities with which we work will be delivering 12 sessions in the formal conference program.

The Alliance’s Frontiers Prevention Project - a multi-country prevention focused initiative – will feature heavily at ICAAP with presentations on various aspects of the project’s approach in both India and Cambodia.

For example, the Alliance will deliver a skills building workshop designed to explore practical issues involved in setting up sexual health clinical services in resource poor settings, drawing on our experience and that of our partner organisations in India.

“With growing commitment to deliver clinical services to people living with and affected by HIV, the workshop is designed to help meet the need for practical information on how sexual health clinics can be established in poor communities and countries,” said Joseph O’Reilly, the Frontiers Prevention Project’s Global Policy Advisor.

The workshop will use selected tools from a manual developed in Andhra Pradesh, India as part of the Frontiers Prevention Project. “We’re looking forward to sharing our experiences with organisations and individuals across the region who are committed to providing sexual health clinical services in poor communities,” said, Shumon Sengupta, the Director of the Alliance’s programme in Andhra Pradesh, India.

The Alliance is participating in two additional skills building workshops at ICAAP, one which will showcase the Alliance’s approach to peer led development of information, education and communication materials for HIV prevention and one in association with the AIDS Council of New South Wales and the Lawyers Collective India on the creation of enabling environments for effective HIV prevention and mitigation.

A list of the times and details of all Alliance sessions at the conference is being produced for distribution at ICAAP and will be available shortly.
