The Stop AIDS Campaign welcomes world leaders' HIV/AIDS commitments at UN Summit

07 October 2005

The largest gathering of world leaders in history convened in New York in September for the United Nations World Summit. The aim of the summit was to discuss development, security, human rights, and the role of the UN in the 21st Century. As recorded in the 2005 World Summit Outcome document, leaders recognised the risk that HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases pose for the world, including the challenges to the achievement of development goals.

The Stop AIDS Campaign, to which the Alliance contributes policy and advocacy work, welcomes these commitments, the highlights of which include:

  • increasing investment to improve health systems;
  • increasing the capacity of individuals to protect themselves from HIV infection;
  • implementing the Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS;
  • coming as close as possible to the goal of universal access to treatment by 2010 for all those who need it; and
  • working actively to implement the ‘Three Ones’ principles in all countries.
