National workshop in Burkina Faso focuses on integrating income generation and HIV/AIDS programmes
27 March 2006
From 22–24 February, Initiative Privée et Communautaire Contre le SIDA (IPC), the Alliance’s linking organisation in Burkina Faso, co-hosted a workshop in Ouagadougou to share the work that they and other organisations in Burkina Faso have been doing to integrate income generation and HIV/AIDS programming.
Programmes addressing these wider social and economic issues also help families and households with a very low level of income to cope with the impact of HIV/AIDS on their lives, and to start taking action. As a result, there is an increasing demand to document this work and share best practice.
IPC is working on a number of pilot projects looking at this issue, and has formed partnerships with micro-credit and micro-health organisations.
The workshop looked at lessons learned, analysed strengths and weaknesses of current programming, and made recommendations for national policy makers. Burkina Faso’s National AIDS Council were involved in the organisation of the workshop, and chaired various sessions.
Participants included representatives from several government departments, international and national NGOs, and community based organisations, who were keen to see how they could incorporate the learning and lessons shared into their work. A member of the Alliance Secretariat’s Policy team attended the workshop to build on the work being done by the team on the issue of mainstreaming HIV/AIDS into broader development work.
