The UN’s High Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS in New York represents a historic opportunity to review progress in responding to AIDS, and to agree concrete commitments to make universal access to HIV prevention and treatment a reality by 2010.

Communities must participate in the process by which the international community agrees on how and when universal access is achieved. Their participation will be vital to the success of efforts to scale up HIV/AIDS services.

The Alliance is working to ensure that the agreements made in New York address the real issues that developing countries face.

A focus on national targets will not be enough to realise universal access to HIV prevention and treatment services. We need an international target too!

The Alliance is urging the UN to ensure that national governments have clear targets for reaching communities at risk, involving people living with HIV, scaling up anti-stigma work, and outlawing discrimination.

The Alliance is calling for the development and implementation of a global action plan on HIV and human rights.
