Accountability for implementation of the UNGASS HIV/AIDS Declaration of Commitment: community-led monitoring

Wednesday 16 August. Time: 14:15-15:45. Location: Session Room 7, Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

This interactive symposium aims to profile and allow for discussion and debate on:

  • the concept and practice of civil society monitoring as a tool for promoting governmental accountability; and
  • country-specific and regional experiences of community-led monitoring of implementation of the UNGASS HIV/AIDS ‘Declaration of Commitment’.

The session will employ an interactive format, with a framing presentation by the Chair followed by a moderated discussion with a panel of people directly managing and/or participating in community-led monitoring projects.

It will look at:

  • the concept and rationale for community-led monitoring;
  • the common methodological elements of the projects undertaken by Gestos, the International Council of AIDS Service Organisations, Panos, and Public Health Watch/Open Society Institute to monitor implementation of the UNGASS HIV/AIDS Declaration of Commitment; and
  • the ways in which these projects promote greater government accountability.

The panelists will share experiences from the monitoring process, findings and recommendations from the UNGASS DoC projects undertaken by Gestos, the International Council of AIDS Service Organisations (ICASO), Panos, and Public Health Watch/Open Society Institute (PHW).

The audience will have an opportunity to answer some of the key questions, share their own experience, opinions, and ask questions to the panel.
