The Loop News from the International HIV/AIDS Alliance: August 2006

Special edition: the Alliance at the XVI International AIDS Conference

Welcome to a special edition of 'The Loop', focusing on Alliance activities at the forthcoming XVI International AIDS Conference, taking place in Toronto from 13–18 August.

Members of the Alliance will be participating in more than 40 events, including symposiums, satellites, poster exhibitions and discussions, skills-building workshops, panel sessions and oral presentations.

In this issue, we focus on just a few of these, but you can view the full list of sessions on the events section of our website.

Focusing on gay and other men who have sex with men

Advancing a global HIV agenda for gay men and other men who have sex with men
A diverse group of gay and other men who have sex with men, and the organisations that work with them will be gathering at this pre-conference symposium in Toronto, 10–11 August. They will be examining the impact of HIV, sharing experiences, and looking at how to increase the level of HIV work being carried out with these groups. One of the aims of the event is to reach agreement on the creation of a global forum on MSM and HIV.

Alliance members will be leading various sessions, and speakers include participants from Alliance projects working with men who have sex with men from Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia, North Africa and the Middle East, and Africa.

See www.msm-aids2006.org for more information.

This Alliance will be participating in this day-long symposium on Saturday 12 August, which will present the latest findings on stigma, gender, and violence, and share practical lessons learned in stigma reduction programmes. Presentations will focus on stigma and policy, stigma and leadership, and the experience of living with and challenging the stigma of AIDS.

The day will also include hand-on skills building sessions, including how to use Understanding and challenging HIV stigma: toolkit for action in various settings and with different populations. There will also be a session on stigma measurement and programme evaluation.

Civil society involvement in Global Fund grants

Supporting civil society engagement in Global Fund implementation: sharing experiences and perspectives

This satellite, which is taking place on Sunday 13 August, will examine lessons from civil society involvement in managing grants and sub-grants from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Jointly led by the Alliance and the Global Fund, the session will consider the experiences of three civil society Principal Recipients. It will also examine the perspectives of the United Nations Development Programme, UNAIDS, and international civil society advocates in strengthening the meaningful contribution of civil society to universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, and care and support.

Orphans and vulnerable children

Sharing good practice on support to orphans and vulnerable children: the online toolkit and CD-ROM www.ovcsupport.net

This Alliance-led satellite, taking place on Monday 14 August, will give participants an introduction to the website and CD-ROM www.ovcsupport.net, developed by the Alliance and Family Health International, demonstrating the classification system used and how it works in action. The online toolkit contains over 600 resources covering all aspects of support to orphans and vulnerable children affected by HIV and AIDS. Questions and ideas from participants will guide the exploration of the toolkit, and participants will have the opportunity to discuss how they currently locate and share information.

The Alliance will be presenting at this learning from practice session, taking place on Thursday 18 August, which will look at ingredients for success and methods for overcoming challenges in the scaling up of HIV prevention and treatment services. Participants will highlight practical strategies to sustain and grow programmes, and cover issues such as adherence and stigma reduction.

This Alliance-led satellite, taking place on Thursday 17 August, will look at treatment access for disempowered communities who are key to the dynamics of transmission of the epidemic in low prevalence settings. These populations include female sex workers, men who have sex with men and injecting drug users.  Speakers will include key population community members who have advocated successfully for treatment services, along with clinical care professionals.
