Warning: fraudulent use of Alliance name

09 August 2006

Please be aware that innocent people and businesses are being targeted by fraudsters, posing as representatives or employees of the International HIV/AIDS Alliance.

Typically, the fraudster will make unsolicited contact with a target by email or through an accommodation or dating site, pretending to be connected with the Alliance. This contact will often end with an urgent and bogus request for money, often related to a dire emergency abroad.

Please be aware that there is absolutely no connection between the Alliance and any of these fraudsters.

Our simple message to those who are targeted in this way is to end correspondence and take these steps:

  1. Let us know the details by email to gshaw@aidsalliance.org.
  2. If you are in the UK, contact the UK Government’s Trading Standards office on 08454 040506.
  3. Contact your local police authority. (Useful UK guidance can be found at http://www.sussex.police.uk/community_safety/fraud.asp)
