An unlikely mix: reducing stigma when sex workers and choirs come together
25 August 2006
In early August, a workshop organised by the International HIV/AIDS Alliance in Madagascar brought about an unlikely pairing, when a choir association led by their minister and a sex workers’ association came together to share their experiences working with young people.
The workshop, which took place in Fort-Dauphin, in the south of Madagascar, brought together three local associations to share their learning and good practice in implementing projects that aim to improve the sexual and reproductive health of young people.
Contrary to expectations, the sex workers’ association and choir association exchanged ideas and shared experiences freely, without stigma or prejudice. Both groups agreed on the importance of their work for youth, and that arguing would be a waste of time.
Participants agreed that the workshop was productive, and are looking forward to the next meeting, happening in a month’s time.
