An exhibition of photos, taken by men who have sex with men, sex workers, and people living with HIV from the Alliance’s Frontiers Prevention Project, is set to highlight some of the unheard voices and hidden lives from the HIV epidemic.

$1 million confirmed for behaviour change work in the Caribbean

Funding of $1m has been confirmed by USAID for the Alliance’s behaviour change work in the Caribbean. USAID has been a key donor for the Alliance’s Caribbean programme since it started in 2003.


Preventing mother-to-child transmission in Ecuador

Corporación Kimirina, the Alliance linking organisation in Ecuador has developed a new national prevention campaign, in partnership with other actors in the country’s AIDS response, which aims to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV.


Profile: Addy Chen, Myanmar

Addy Chen is a programme officer for the Alliance in Myanmar (and previously a consultant). As well as working with men who have sex with men, he also works on the greater involvement of people living with HIV. Addy is profiled in a recent Treat Asia Report, where he tells the story of how he got involved in HIV work. He also comments on the Global Fund’s pullout from Myanmar, describing it as disastrous for the country’s 45,000 people who need antiretrovirals.


Let's give friends an identity card!

Peer education is proving effective in prevention work, but peer educators need identity cards for their own protection. This was the key message coming out of the first annual peer educators’ forum held in Mongolia.


Communicating better about sex

The Alliance in Madagascar has been acting on its belief that improving communication between parents and children is key to the sexual and reproductive health of young people.


Standing up for HIV prevention: the Alliance on film

A film prominently featuring the Alliance’s HIV prevention initiatives in New Delhi was launched at the XVI International AIDS Conference in Toronto. Standing up for HIV prevention is from award-winning director Staffan Hildebrand.


Making an impact: the case of SKOWA

The Street Kids, Orphans and Widows Association (SKOWA), Zambia has been having a tangible impact on the community. The Loop highlights how SKOWA has been changing people’s attitudes towards HIV and those living with it, and encouraging safer sexual behaviour.


Policy and advocacy

Alliance welcomes new International Drug Purchasing Facility

The initiative will use revenues from air passenger duty to fund responses to HIV, tuberculosis and malaria and to boost public health systems in developing countries. It also aims to drive down the cost of essential medicines.


The challenges and opportunities around promoting condoms
In June 2006, the Alliance hosted a joint meeting with the journal Reproductive Health Matters to explore the barriers to and successful methods of condom promotion. Presentations and a report from the meeting are now available.

New global forum to address HIV vulnerability of gay and other men who have sex with men
The forum, formed as the first of its kind at the XVI International AIDS Conference in Toronto, will co-ordinate a global response to gaps in funding and services for men who have sex with men.

Working with the UK Department for International Development, India
The Alliance participated in a recent meeting with the UK Department for International Development to agree on programming objectives and advise the Indian government on increasing the impact of interventions for injecting drug users.

Focused prevention

Universal access: delivering on the promise for key populations
The Alliance is holding a one day conference in London in November to share experiences developing and delivering HIV prevention services with populations key to the epidemic.
