HIV bulletin calls for new advisory panel members

03 November 2006

Keeping up to date with clinical advances in HIV medicine, particularly those in resource-limited settings, can be difficult, but it is a requirement of all healthcare professionals. However, wading through the amount of material generated can be time-consuming.

That’s why the Alliance has supported NAM’s publication of a bi-monthly bulletin HATIP – HIV and AIDS Treatment in Practice for the last three-and-a-half years. These electronic newsletters gather all the most important and useful reports and publish easy-to-read summaries with links to NAM’s well-known aidsmap website.

Every edition has an editorial focus on a key area of HIV management in resource-poor settings. Examples of topics covered in the past include HIV and tuberculosis, injecting drug use and HIV, and hepatitis co-infections, to name just a few.

HATIP production is supported by an international editorial board, which suggests topics for editions and reviews articles. There are now vacancies on this board. We are particularly interested in health professionals who live and practice in Nigeria, China or Cambodia. If you or someone you know is interested, you can contact Keith Alcorn at NAM: keith@nam.org.uk

The Alliance recognises the importance of continued professional education for all those involved in the HIV field and has provided financial and technical inputs into the publication of HATIP from the outset. The Alliance is represented on the advisory panel, suggesting editorial topics and supporting the development of HATIP. Linking and partner organisations and country offices provide feedback, and Alliance departments share contacts. Where appropriate, the Alliance also shares work-plans with NAM so the two organisations can make sure that the newsletter complements the Alliance’s work with healthcare professionals.

This year, in order to broaden the geographical reach of HATIP, the Alliance and NAM have run two pilot editions in Russian, primarily to support the antiretroviral treatment rollout programme in Ukraine but also available to all subscribers.

HATIP subscribers come from 199 countries, with over 1,300 subscribers in India and over 7,000 from sub-Saharan African countries. To subscribe to HATIP, click here. If you have internet email access only, please send an email with your name, email address and the country in which you work to: hatip@nam.org.uk with the words “add HATIP list” in the subject line.
