Advocacy strengthens civil society capacity
03 November 2006
Participatory methods taken from the Advocacy in action toolkit were brought into play when Alliance India hosted a workshop on advocacy in New Delhi for lead partners and implementing NGOs.
The workshop aimed to strengthen partners’ ability to inform and influence the response to HIV/AIDS at district, state and national levels through advocacy interventions.
Participants learned the basics of advocacy, differentiating it from other communication concepts often confused with advocacy, like community mobilisation and networking.
They were then taken through a series of steps for planning, implementing, co-ordinating and evaluating advocacy campaigns, using real examples of communities who have successfully negotiated change in legislation, policy and practice.
The workshop also covered ways to integrate advocacy into existing programmes, developing skills and methods to advocate, and the role of communities and broader alliances in seeking policy change.
Alliance India proposed a framework for influencing HIV/AIDS agendas at state, national and international level through collective advocacy action that was endorsed by the partner organisations.
The workshop formed part of Alliance India’s commitment to strengthening civil society’s capacity on HIV/AIDS.
