Kabompo AIDS Programme: Kennedy Madichi, Lucius Kayeye and Charity Malasa's experiences

Kennedy, a member of the Kabompo AIDS Programme* School Leavers’ Business Group, went on to run a successful business that was also innovative and creative. He became the leader of his group, and together they set up a shop in Kabompo market where they sell drinks, snacks and bread. Through their training they learnt how to calculate profit and loss and how to manage their business.

The group believes that the experience has not only contributed to their business but also to their personal and family life, as they now understand the importance of personal responsibility. Lucius, another group member, thinks he could now provide help to other young people in the community if they want to start up their own business. He even has dreams of handing his current business over to other young people so that he has time to build up a new business. Lucius has already researched similar business in the community to learn about their successes and failures.

*Kabompo AIDS Programme, an implementing partner of Alliance Zambia, is located in Kabompo district in the Northwestern Province of Zambia. It targets at-risk groups such as children, women and young people in order to reduce their vulnerability to HIV and AIDS. Entrepreneurial skills and capital support empowerment are an important component in the programmes that target young people. The Alliance provides technical and financial support to the programme – one of three organisations that the Alliance is supporting in the North Western province of Zambia.
