Making the most of learning across the Alliance

18 December 2006

As a new example of the Alliance’s focus on catalysing south to south learning and support, Alliance Myanmar received monitoring and evaluation (M&E) assistance from Alliance India during a recent ten-day technical support visit funded by the Planning Analysis and Learning (PAL) team at the Alliance secretariat.

The Alliance country office in Myanmar was established in 2004. Currently, projects on care and support are being implemented through eight partners; projects on sex workers through three partners; and three informal groups of men who have sex with men are being supported through small grants for specific activities.

The growth in these programmes has led to a greater monitoring and reporting requirement. The inclusion of additional donors (EU, USAID, UNDP, WHO) in the last year has added to this need.

What the technical support visit achieved

  • It reviewed the M&E system and reporting requirements – specifically, donor requirements, partner recording formats, tools for data collection and partner reporting formats to the Alliance.
  • It supported programme officers and the M&E consultant in conducting a three-day M&E workshop for 16 non-governmental organisation partners.
  • It supported the M&E consultant in an analysis of and presentation on the monitoring and reporting system data in order to reflect on the performance and effectiveness of the Alliance Myanmar programme.
  • It developed a reporting and monitoring guide specific to the Myanmar programme.
