Celebrating the achievements of the Frontiers Prevention Project in Ecuador
18 December 2006
The Frontiers Prevention Project – a multi-country HIV-prevention-focused initiative in five low prevalence countries put at risk by the growing pandemic – is ending in Ecuador and Alliance linking organisation Kimirina and partners have recently organised a number of events to share the project’s outcomes and achievements. Partners and local actors from the project sites of Guayaquil, Quevedo, Portoviejo, Santo Domingo and Esmeraldas, organised and participated in seminars, exhibitions, marches and public speeches.
National HIV/AIDS Congress
One of the main events was the National HIV/AIDS Congress, organised by Kimirina and the Alliance, where project participants shared their experiences, successes and challenges. Regional actors such as Via Libre from Peru, IDH from Bolivia, and ASICAL also participated, and the Alliance’s work with Latin American and Caribbean networks was presented.
The congress also gave the opportunity to find out more about national research and studies on HIV and bioethics. An exhibition of Unheard Voices, Hidden Lives, a participatory photography project organised as part of the Frontiers Prevention Project, was also available at satellite meetings.
Code of good practice
As part of the celebrations, Kimirina invited national organisations to participate in the Code of Good Practice for NGOs Responding to HIV/AIDS. As a result, around 20 national non-government and community-based organisations in Ecuador have signed up to the code to promote accountability and transparency in their work.
World AIDS Day
Finally, on World AIDS Day, Kimirina participated in round table meetings to promote the active participation of civil society organisations and for wider collaboration in advocating for public policies on prevention and attention for people with HIV.
