Spotlight on World AIDS Day

This year’s World AIDS Day – 1 December 2006 – saw the Alliance and partners organise and participate in a wide range of innovative events.

In Mozambique, the Alliance organised a photo exhibition – ‘The children left behind’ – which showed the stories of children orphaned by HIV in Mozambique, and Alliance Mozambique’s work in the field. Staff participated in a march in Beira, and a modelling show demonstrated the importance of antiretroviral treatment. Find out more…

In Andhra Pradesh, India, an entertainment show interspersed with messages about HIV prevention and stigma and discrimination attracted over 6,000 people, and was shown live on television. Find out more…

The Ukraine office organised and participated in a wide range of activities, including a charity art fair ‘Young art against AIDS’ which raised over US $3,600; a public event covering 46 towns and cities called ‘Keep living!’; a national conference of positive people and HIV-service organisations; an event for university students on HIV testing; and interviews raising HIV concerns on national radio and television. As part of the celebrations marking the Frontiers Prevention Project coming to an end in Ecuador, Kimirina participated in a number of round table meetings to promote the participation of civil society in advocating for prevention and attention for people with HIV. Find out more…

In Manila, Philippines, the 2006 International AIDS Conference, which took place in Toronto, Canada, was being followed up. PHANSup, the Alliance’s linking organisations in the Philippines, was one of the sponsors of ‘Beyond Toronto AIDS 2006: The Philippine scenario’, which aimed to continue the energy of the Toronto conference by bringing like-minded individuals and organisations together to influence more people to be involved in the AIDS response.

In the UK, the exhibition of Unheard Voices, Hidden Lives, a participatory photography project, was shown in Brighton and London. The Alliance’s Director of Technical Support, Fareed Abdullah, also spoke at an event ‘Maximising EU and UK efforts to fight AIDS’ organised by Peter Skinner, the Member of the European Parliament for the South-East.
