World AIDS Day show in Andhra Pradesh, India, attracts over 6,000 people

18 December 2006

In an innovative collaboration between international non-governmental organisations, the corporate sector and the AIDS Control Society of Andhra Pradesh, an entertainment show was held in Hyderabad to mark World AIDS Day in Andhra Pradesh. The event attracted over 6,000 people and was covered live on television. The aim of the show was to raise awareness and to profile organisations addressing the AIDS pandemic with prevention, care and support.

Entertainment programmes were interspersed with messages around HIV prevention, stigma and discrimination. The Alliance India Andhra Pradesh office developed the concept for the show, and coordinated its arrangement, writing scripts and creating branding for the venue and for the media.

The Indian and Andhra Pradesh government lent their support by sending out strong messages around the prevention of HIV. Andhra Pradesh’s director general of police delivered a special message to police personnel urging them to support the prevention efforts of the international NGOs and also signed some of the identity cards of outreach staff.
