A World AIDS Day exhibition by award-winning photographer Nell Freeman will feature photographs of the work of the International HIV/AIDS Alliance in Africa. Nell was inspired to hold the exhibition after visits to the Alliance’s work over the past year.

Her exhibition, ‘The ocean is made of many drops’, will feature a mix of photographs and interviews with people putting innovative local solutions to HIV into practice in Zambia, Madagascar, Morocco and Malawi.

“This year marks 20 years of World AIDS Day,” said Nell “and while huge numbers of people are still being infected with HIV, I wanted to show the resourcefulness of people in coming up with their own, local solutions.”

“I’ve been struck by the strength of indigenous responses to the epidemic – from local communities coming together to work out how to speak out about difficult issues in traditional settings, to how people are using traditional practices to incorporate their HIV messages. I hope that these stories will inspire people to refocus on HIV.”

The exhibition will run from 30 November to 7 December 2007 at the Gymnasium in London, opposite St Pancras railway station. The photography and accompanying text will be displayed in five arches, each 3.7m high – directly opposite the St Pancras International and Eurostar terminals, which are re-opening on 14 November. Eurostar expects more than 21,000 people to use the new station daily.
