From 4-7 September 2007, the Alliance, in collaboration with Alliance linking organisation Initiative Privée et Communautaire de lutte Contre le VIH/SIDA au Burkina Faso (IPC), organised an onward granting workshop for its partners in francophone Africa. This was the first time that programme and finance staff had the opportunity to meet formally to discuss the onward-granting aspects of their programmes, and a key message coming out of the workshop was the need to increase the profile of onward granting management, and to maintain close links with programme implementation.

Participants shared experiences and discussed all stages of the onward granting cycle. A parallel event allowed participants to share tools and training materials on onward-granting, raising awareness of resources in the region, and of where there are gaps.

The workshop led to a detailed action plan on how to improve current systems, and a learning group on onward granting. Participants unanimously recommended institutionalising meetings and workshops on onward granting, and advocating for more space for onward granting activities in country strategy and operational planning.

16 participants from Alliance country offices and linking organisations in the region attended the workshop:

  • L'Alliance Nationale Contre le SIDA en Côte d’Ivoire (ANS-CI)
  • Alliance Nationale Contre le SIDA (ANCS), Senegal
  • Association Marocaine de Solidarité et Développement (AMSED), Morocco
  • Initiative Privée et Communautaire Contre le VIH/SIDA au Burkina Faso (IPC), Burkina Faso
  • International HIV/AIDS Alliance in Madagascar.
