IMPACT 2010: new Alliance strategy to take community action to scale
The Alliance’s new three-year strategic framework, IMPACT 2010, will see the Alliance working in 40 countries through a partnership of 50 linking organisations by 2010 – with community action making a demonstrable contribution to curbing the HIV epidemic.

Supporting young people with HIV in Brazil to share their stories
The second issue of Saber Viver Jovem (Living young), a magazine compiled by young people living with HIV in Brazil, is now available. The magazine was produced as part of a project by the Alliance and the NGOs Saber Viver and Pela Vidda, and allows young people, many of whom have been living with HIV since childhood, to share their experiences.

Alliance Myanmar recognises four community members with leadership awards
Four community members were presented with leadership awards for their dedication to civil society and the HIV response at a partners’ forum organised by Alliance Myanmar in November 2007. Ukrainian government decision on methadone will help scale up HIV prevention with drug users

Coordinated advocacy efforts led by Alliance Ukraine have led to the Ukrainian government allowing the importation of methadone. Methadone is used in substitution therapy to treat drug dependency and can help prevent HIV infection among injecting drug users. Access to cheaper methadone will help scale up existing programmes supported by the Global Fund.


Dancing condoms video a hit on YouTube

A short film designed to encourage condom use among key populations in Andhra Pradesh, India, has become a hit on YouTube. The catchy tune and dancing condoms have attracted over 600,000 views, and the video has been given a four-star rating.


Monaco meeting allows networks of people living with HIV to plan for LIVING 2008

HIV+ Monaco, a meeting in January 2008 co-organised by the Alliance, allowed leaders from networks from people living with HIV to reflect on knowledge sharing and improving collaboration, and to start planning for LIVING 2008: The Positive Leadership Summit – the twelfth international conference for people living with HIV.


World AIDS Day 2007

Mozambique World AIDS Day music festival attracts thousands
An 11-hour festival sponsored by the Alliance in Mozambique was the largest World AIDS Day event in Beira city. More than 10,000 people enjoyed music and dance, and the opportunity to find out more about HIV.

Brighton and London photography exhibitions highlight the Alliance’s work
The Alliance secretariat’s photography exhibition Communities for Life! marked World AIDS Day in Brighton, UK, by showing some of the extraordinary things that ordinary people are doing to respond to HIV around the world. Photos of the Alliance’s work also appeared in a World AIDS Day exhibition in London by award-winning photographer Nell Freeman. The photos were displayed in huge arches in front of the re-opened St Pancras and Eurostar railway terminals, which see a huge number of visitors each day.

Speaking out against HIV discrimination in Myanmar
The message from Alliance Myanmar this World AIDS day was that people, especially those living with HIV, need to speak out to stop HIV discrimination. One of Alliance Myanmar’s partners, Myanmar Positive group has been leading by example – by organising an art exhibition about HIV positive leaders in Myanmar, demanding that world leaders keep their promise on universal access, and supporting HIV positive people in hospital.

Alliance India and partners mark World AIDS Day
Alliance India and its partners organised a number of activities to mark World AIDS Day. The success of the events was attributed to partnership building and the solidarity of organisations working in the field of HIV.

Policy and advocacy

Action for Global Health reflects on progress after a year of activities

Action for Global Health – a network of 15 NGOs conducting advocacy work on the health Millennium Development Goals – met in December 2007 to review progress and to plan advocacy for 2008. The meeting also gave members, including the Alliance, the opportunity to discuss how to expand the network’s membership.


Organisational development

Organisational change creates new focus for Secretariat
A new structure, designed to help the Alliance deliver on its ambitious new strategic framework, has been implemented at the Alliance Secretariat in Brighton, UK, from 1 February 2008.  This follows a significant organisational review of the Secretariat over the past few months.

International management development programme benefits the Alliance
Alliance Uganda’s Milly Katana, one of five Alliance managers participating in the International Masters Programme in Practicing Management, describes the benefits of the programme for her role as a country office manager.

International HIV/AIDS Alliance and UNAIDS renew collaborating centre agreement
The Alliance and UNAIDS have signed a new agreement for the Alliance to act as a UNAIDS collaborating centre, renewing their commitment to work together to support global efforts to reach universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support services for all those in need.
