A gala event featuring theatre and dance officially launched Alliance for AIDS Action in India – the Alliance’s latest linking organisation.

Supporting young, marginalised people in Madagascar to improve their sexual and reproductive health
Alliance Madagascar has been working with local community associations in Tamatave to improve the sexual and reproductive health of marginalised young people. Participatory discussions combined with sports and dance activities have reached 853 people in three months, and health service consultations have increased by 5%.

Vasavya Mahila Mandali celebrates International Women’s Day
Vasavya Mahila Mandali, Alliance India’s lead partner in Andhra Pradesh, marked International Women’s Day by celebrating the outstanding contribution of women in a number of fields. At the event, VMM’s president emphasised the role of women in bringing about positive changes in society.

Policy and advocacy

Encouraging civil society engagement in the International Health Partnership
Through Action for Global Health, the Alliance is working to ensure strong civil society engagement in the International Health Partnership, arguing that countries see bigger health gains when governments work in partnership with civil society.

Alliance presents evidence to House of Lords Committee

The Alliance presented evidence to a UK House of Lords Committee on Intergovernmental Organisations in March 2008, stating that despite intergovernmental organisations playing an important role in the fight against infectious diseases, governments and civil society deliver programmes more cost effectively and sustainably.


Civil society, HIV/AIDS & Africa: capacity, sustainability, partnerships
In December 2007, the Alliance co-hosted a meeting for donors and national and international institutions to share lessons and set out models for strengthening civil society’s role in the HIV response. The meeting Civil society, HIV/AIDS & Africa: capacity, sustainability, partnerships also looked at support mechanisms, and addressed bottlenecks to making the money work. Organisational development

Alliance broadens its charitable objects to include human rights and sexual and reproductive health
The Alliance has changed its charitable objects as part of its commitment to linking sexual and reproductive health with HIV and to human rights. The new objects now better reflect the Alliance’s purpose.

Alliance bids farewell to two long-standing trustees, while welcoming two more

The Alliance bid a fond farewell to two of its long-standing trustees in April 2008 – Fatou Sow and Fleur Fisher. The two new trustees joining the Alliance's board are Jan Cedergren and Carole Presern.


Training & knowledge management

New knowledge sharing and networking portal for Latin America and the Caribbean
The Alliance and AIDSPortal have formed a partnership to develop PortalSIDA – a Spanish-language website for the HIV community in Latin America. Portal users will be able to access and share information about their HIV work and network with each other. (Find out more in English or Spanish)

Alliance workshop helps participants to apply for Global Fund Round 8 funding
At a recent workshop, the Alliance supported civil society participants to understand strategic issues around Round 8 proposals to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Participants were also able to learn from successful Global Fund grant recipients, and were trained in skills to support their participation in Country Coordinating Mechanisms.

Last chance to enter international development journalism competition
The entry deadline for the Guardian International Development Journalism competition – a joint initiative between the UK's Guardian newspaper, the Alliance and fellow NGOs – is 6 May 2008. Aspiring UK-based journalists are being asked to write about the developing world, and finalists will have the chance to visit Alliance and other NGO programmes in Africa and Asia.
