USAID partnership
Celebrating ten years of collaboration with USAID February 2008 saw the conclusion of a ten-year grant between the Alliance and USAID – one of the most important funding mechanisms in the Alliance’s history.
Around the world
Scaling up community action on HIV in Zambia The Alliance’s ACER project in Zambia is to grow after research shows the importance of engaging community support on HIV prevention and adherence to antiretroviral treatment.
A new training programme in the Philippines is equipping local organisations with business skills to generate sustainable funding.
Scaling up HIV responses in the Philippines and Asia-Pacific region The new strategic plan for Alliance linking organisation Philippine NGO Support Programme (PHANSuP) aims for HIV and reproductive health scale-up within the Philippines and across the Asia-Pacific region.
Sex workers often face stigma and discrimination by medical staff which stops them from accessing health services. Alliance Ukraine is addressing this by training medical staff to provide non-judgemental, appropriate health services.
Swapping entertainment for education: Soth Mom’s story Soth Mom, a former karaoke and indirect entertainment worker wanted to provide health education after finding out she was HIV positive. With support from KHANA, the Alliance’s linking organisation in Cambodia, Mom has met and educated nearly 600 people in her new role as an HIV prevention educator.
Policy and advocacy
From evidence to policy: HIV findings from the field Stop AIDS Alliance and the European Parliamentary Forum on Population and Development held an event at the European Parliament in February. They highlighted the importance of grassroots evidence to inform policies that will deliver results for people affected by HIV.
The Alliance is a member of a consortium of organisations working to support the integration of reproductive health with HIV in Round 8 proposals for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
Journalism competition
Alliance joins UK newspaper for international development journalism competition The Alliance is partnering with the Guardian newspaper to find 16 exciting new voices in journalism. Finalists will visit Alliance and other NGO programmes in Africa and Asia and their final submissions will be published in the Guardian newspaper.
Organisational development
Academic and private sector expertise to strengthen Alliance programmes The Alliance has launched a new private sector partnerships initiative that will work with the private sector and academia to support the scaling up of the Alliance’s work. The first project will see ten corporate enterprises and INSEAD business school mentoring and providing training to Alliance organisations.
For the second year, the Alliance has secured funding to send four of its staff on the International Masters Programme in Practicing Management – with the aim of supporting the organisational development of the Alliance.
A short film discussing the Alliance’s vision behind its new strategic framework to 2010 is now available. The film also looks at the contribution the Alliance plans to make to the HIV response.
