Alliance bids farewell to two long-standing trustees, while welcoming two more
The Alliance bid a fond farewell to two of its long-standing trustees in April 2008 – Fatou Sou and Fleur Fisher. The two new trustees joining the Alliance are Jan Cedergren and Carole Presern.

Alliance presents evidence to House of Lords Committee
Inter-governmental organisations play important normative and coordination roles in the fight against infectious diseases, but should leave implementation to governments and civil society who can and do deliver programmes at scale in more cost effective and sustainable ways. This was the message from the Alliance at a UK House of Lords Committee on Intergovernmental Organisations that took place on 31 March 2008.

Encouraging civil society engagement in the International Health Partnership
The Alliance, through Action for Global Health, is working hard to ensure strong civil society engagement in the International Health Partnership – an initiative launched by the World Health Organization, the World Bank, and the UK’s Department for International Development (among others) to better harmonise donor aid for health.

Alliance broadens its charitable objects to include human rights and sexual and reproductive health.
The Alliance has changed its charitable objects as part of its commitment to linking sexual and reproductive health with HIV and to human rights. The new objects now better reflect the Alliance’s purpose.

New knowledge sharing and networking portal for Latin America and the Caribbean
The Alliance and AIDSPortal have formed a partnership to develop PortalSIDA – a Spanish-language website for the HIV community in Latin America. Portal users will be able to access and share information about their HIV work and network with each other.

Supporting young, marginalised people in Madagascar to improve their sexual and reproductive health
Alliance Madagascar has been working with local community associations in Tamatave to improve the sexual and reproductive health of marginalised young people. Participatory discussions combined with sports and dance activities have reached 853 people in three months, and health service consultations have increased by 5%.

Vasavya Mahila Mandali celebrates International Women’s Day
Vasavya Mahila Mandali, Alliance India’s lead partner in Andhra Pradesh, marked International Women’s Day by celebrating the outstanding contribution of women in a number of fields. At the event, VMM’s president emphasised the role of women in bringing about positive changes in society.

Alliance workshop helps participants to apply for Global Fund Round 8 funding
At a recent workshop, the Alliance supported civil society participants to understand strategic issues around Round 8 proposals to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Participants were also able to learn from successful Global Fund grant recipients, and were trained in skills to support their participation in Country Coordinating Mechanisms.

Academic and private sector expertise to strengthen Alliance programmes
The Alliance has launched a new private sector partnerships initiative that will work with the private sector and academia to support the scaling up of the Alliance’s work. The first project will see ten corporate enterprises and INSEAD business school mentoring and providing training to Alliance organisations.

Stop AIDS Alliance and the European Parliamentary Forum on Population and Development held an event at the European Parliament in February. They highlighted the importance of grassroots evidence to inform policies that will deliver results for people affected by HIV.

The Alliance is partnering with the Guardian newspaper to find 16 exciting new voices in journalism. Finalists will visit Alliance and other NGO programmes in Africa and Asia and their final submissions will be published in the Guardian newspaper.

Swapping entertainment for education: Soth Mom’s story
Soth Mom, a former karaoke and indirect entertainment worker wanted to provide health education after finding out she was HIV positive. With support from KHANA, the Alliance’s linking organisation in Cambodia, Mom has met and educated nearly 600 people in her new role as an HIV prevention educator.
