A partnership approach

No single organisation or approach is able to tackle the HIV epidemic on its own. The International HIV/AIDS Alliance (the Alliance) is engaged in a number of innovative partnerships, supporting cross-cutting projects that involve a range of countries, activities and approaches. These include:

The Stop AIDS Alliance

The Stop AIDS Alliance is a Brussels-based joint initiative by Stop AIDS Now! (the Netherlands) and the Alliance. Its aim is to strengthen European policy on HIV/AIDS in order to support communities, both in developing countries and the wider world, to play a full and effective role in the global response to AIDS.

Action for Global Health

The Alliance is a partner in Action for Global Health, which has been formed by 15 non-governmental organisations and charities to increase support from Europe to enable developing countries to make substantial progress towards the Health Millennium Development Goals by 2015. Current partners are based in Spain, Italy, France, Germany, the UK and Brussels. ActionAid International provides the overall co-ordination from its Brussels office.

Health and Development Networks

In 2007, the Alliance entered into a two-year partnership with Health and Development Networks (HDN). The objective of the partnership is to strengthen communities and civil society by producing and disseminating information, knowledge and experiences on the day-to-day realities and needs faced by affected people and communities at the local level in national responses to HIV and tuberculosis (TB). The partnership aims to support direct participation, constructive dialogue and civil society engagement in country responses to HIV and TB through HDN’s Partnership Platforms Initiative.

United Nations Joint Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS)

As a UNAIDS Collaborating Centre, the Alliance regularly responds to requests and opportunities from UNAIDS to influence the broader programme and policy environment. The Alliance participates in UNAIDS' Programme Co-ordinating Board meetings and has been granted Special Consultative status by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations.

Horizons

The Alliance is involved as one of five partner organisations in supporting operations research and related activities under the Horizons project.

Health Communication Partnership

The Health Communication Partnership (HCP) is an innovative, collaborative partnership led by the Center for Communication Programs at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, USA. It has the overall aim of promoting health-competent societies by advancing the field of health communication, based on proven and evidence-based strategies, experience and the development of new approaches. The partnership will help create supportive environments, effective health services and health literacy at both the individual and societal levels.

NAM

The Alliance is working in partnership with NAM to make HIV and AIDS information resources more accessible to organisations, health professionals and people with HIV in resource poor and middle-income countries.
